...is the right answer

We were the strongest proponents of Turkey's accession for many years, on the grounds that Turkey is a vital ally against Daesh, and also with the thought that EU accession was a good way of expanding our values (liberal democracy) in the way it has done with other accession states (notably in Eastern Europe, which could have gone a number of ways, but the carrot of EU membership meant they went a democratic way with some recognition of Human Rights and so on).

However that stopped when Erdogan showed his true colours and there is simply no way we (or many other states) would agree to accession under his rule. There can be no question of Turkey joining under Erdogan or anyone like him.
