take over if the leader prevents secularism, and arrange democratic elections as soon as possible. That happened 2 or 3 times already last century.
It should have happened years ago when it became apparent that Erdogan is an Islamist. However, he persecuted all the secular heads of the police (that control that he achieved you saw in the reaction to the demonstrations in Taksim square), and did the same to the army leadership.
I've actually had a Turkish general and his wife over for dinner. He had been hounded out of the army with anonymous death threats to him and his family. Scary story.
Many were also sent to jail. That weakened the army's likelihood to seize control for the past few years.
So I am hoping that is what this is and that they have managed to regroup. I hope there is very limited bloodshed.
