No they are not. they are happening because a lot of

mainly young and impressionable people influenced by media figures and social media have been whipped up into a frenzy by people who regard themselves as somehow intellectually superior to those who voted to leave and can't accept the result.

The narrative seems to be "they must have misunderstood the issues or been lied to because anyone who did understand the truth couldn't possibly disagree with what I think."
