I think that's a big element of what it means to say we don't 'play like a team'. Playing like a team means doing all the unglamorous things - making runs off the ball, closing down your man even when he probably won't get the ball, playing the simple pass just to keep the ball moving and stretch the opposition - over and over and over again. Stuff you don't get noticed for but that makes the team more effective.
And maybe you're right that our players have particular incentives not to do that stuff. Interesting.
