IMHO it was absolutely an anti-establishment vote...

But those who lost seem to blame it on xenophobic motives.........while displaying those very same motives.

I personally said at the time the EU refugee policy was a f**king disaster.
At best Germany's policy of "everyone come on in" was stupid.
At worst it was selfish/Evil in that they knew that it encouraged more people to get on s**tty boats and they also knew the people coming had money and were probably reasonably educated so they would possibly help the German Economy.
While at the same depriving war torn countries of the smartest young people who would be needed to rebuild.
