The word nagy, which they're mispronouncing a bit as "nodge", means "big"

The vowel sound is kind of half way between an a (sound as in apple) and o (sound as in got). It's quite a common surname in Hungary (a former ruler in Communist times was Imre Nagy, or rather Nagy Imre because the Hungarians put the surname first)

When I lived there I enjoyed saying I was from "big" :-)
