Didn't the Roman Empire collapse due to mental illness caused by lead piping?

Could we be on the verge of a pandemic that nobody can see, let alone understand? In 2000 years' time will the great Inuit civilisations of the future dig up remains of once-great cities and discover primitive "possibly electronic" equipment once used to communicate utter drivel between rival factions in what looks like very bitter arguments about sports clothing?

I'm off to buy lots of aluminium foil and gold.
