The significance of the sword is that it's Valyrian steel, which we know from Hardhome can defeat White Walkers. Only Valyrian steel and dragonglass can do that. Maybe Sam will find a way in Oldtown to make more Valyrian steel (it can't be forged any more, there's magic involved, though there are some ironworkers who can re-forge it once made, which is how Arya got Needle and Brienne got Oathkeeper).

I think Sam and what he finds in Oldtown are going to be central to the endgame, as is Bran, as is Jon, as are dragons. If anyone ends up on the Iron Throne it will be Sansa, but there might not be an Iron Throne by the end.
