the laptop i use is over 4 years old, nothing special when it was new, and it copes just fine with it
the most important bit of kit is the turbo itself i use a Tacx Vortex Smart Trainer User Posted Link (was ?40 cheaper when i bought it) and a second-hand Suunto Mini Move Stick (Ant+ dongle) to allow Zwift on my PC to control the resistance of the turbo - bluetooth support is in beta at the mo, no idea when it might go live
Zwift can control the resistance to simulate the steepness of the virtual climbs or it can control to a preset workout such as for interval training
i really like it, it makes workouts on the turbo far more interesting, i've not done any of the group rides yet, mostly because i haven't taken anytime to figure out the messaging system, but i have seen Jens Voigt on there (i got no where near him) and got overtaken by Fumiyuki Beppu like i was standing still
like you i have small kids so can't spare the time i would like to. mine are old enough and still trustworthy enough, that i can disappear to the garage and leave them playing on the Wii for an hour - and in that hour i'd get a better quality workout than if i was just able to ride the road for an hour, or what i was doing was watching a stream of the footie on my tablet while i had Zwift on the laptop because, again, it's not easy to find the time to fit both in separately
also, having just broken my hand, although i'm not able to ride my bike on the road while it heals (can't pull the brake) i can pedal away on the turbo - i would be doing it now - with highlights of the Giro on my tablet - but i need to get my bike fixed first :-)
