Pretty sure teams still tried their best to win

The 'big' teams would have finished higher if they could have done - the idea that they just didn't bother because there wasn't CL reward doesn't stand up. They just didn't have the financial advantage over the rest of the league that they gained after the Sky deal (TV money in the 70s/80s was distributed evenly among teams in all four divisions), so the competition level was more even.
