6-pointer

If there anyone on here that can provide a logical explanation as to why certain games (like our one against Newcastle on Saturday) is referred to as a 6-pointer? I understand the fact that it's points we get that they don't, but at the end of the day we are still only 3 points better off than they are after beating them. Doesn't make sense to me.
