And the NFL breathed a deep sigh of relief.

The media bods could (rightly) start their eulogies about his great career and how he was a model pro who went out on top after winning a second SB, and not have to worry about him fading away on the bench of a second string franchise while his body gave up. Plus the League don't have to worry about the shadow of teabaggate hanging over one of their biggest active assets.

Seriously though, I'm surprised it took him this long to make the decision. I appreciate his whole life has been football, but this was such a perfect set-up - QBs barely ever manage to retire at the very top. I suspect it was the possible humiliation of being the first double SB-winning QB to be cut by his franchise that pushed him into the decision into the end (or even the lack of the interest from other teams).
