Later in the trial jurors heard Johnson?s admission that, during a meeting on 4 May last year, he told Byrne he had kissed the girl and exchanged messages with her. In a statement on Wednesday, which the club said would be its only comment on the case, Sunderland described that meeting peremptorily, making no reference to Johnson?s supposed admissions to Byrne but carefully pointing out that ?during the time she was present, there was no suggestion whatsoever that Mr Johnson would be changing his plea? of not guilty.
