May I please offer a dissenting voice.
I hate emoticons. Hate them. Detest, despise, loathe them.
Of course it's always useful to convey the spirit of what you've typed where doubt may be caused, and therefore many of us use :o) or the like. That's fine, a useful (set of) tool(s).
But some sites one may visit - and some emails one may recieve - use SO FUCKING MANY multiFUCKINGcoloured FUCKING EMOTICONS
hang on a minute, I'm too angry to carry on with this
Wouldn't it be better if more people took the trouble to think about their English, and expressed themselves with some thought? That's not meant to be against you, IH, 'cos you've no probs on that score. It's just that to me emoticons are more annoying than ppl wrtng in txtspk.
Talking of txtspk: I had to ask my daughter why she's used the word 'newer' in an SMS when it made no sense. Apparently she meant 'anywhere'. (bangs head against wall).
Don't get me started on animated emoticons......
