What was your ex's reaction? If she was horrified too that's one thing. If it wasn't a misunderstanding, the tool really was his, and she thinks that's OK, well, it isn't.

I agree that kids are mollycoddled far too much these days but that's way over any kind of acceptable line in terms of safeguarding. I think it would be reasonable to ask what steps are taken to ensure your son's safety in your absence.
