There was a similar piece in the Times today by Matthew Syed

Saying we don't want to lose witty terrace banter and then handwringing over various "vile" chants. Trouble is, one man's vile chant is another man's spontaneous chuckle.

Syed also referred to "vile hand gestures", which sounded a bit Mary Whitehouse to me
