I really think the EU has replaced the idea of the USSR as a working communist state for many on here; a huge non-elected permanent government administering & allocating wealth as they see fit. All done in the name of disinterested humanity of course (e.g. the Kinnocks ha bloody ha) but unfortunately national interests always take over. In fact it's only those interests that save it from a complete nightmare, since having to have a democratic vote in the member countries prevents a totalitarian superstate.

And I do not trust any dictatorship - however benign. Sooner or later some mad set of bastards take charge.

I would recommend everyone to read The Open Society & Its Enemies by Karl Popper.
