i'm all for a secular state me. but i'm not sure that's the subject in hand
fundamentally, i'd be delighted if religion was completely removed and separate from all these institutions and processes. but it isnt
pragmatically, i reckon the pope commenting on whether or not a potential future leader of the worlds biggest power is a christian or not, based on the policies he espouses, is about fair enough. it falls within his purview. and as it goes, what the pope said was pretty measured, just said a person who built walls rather than bridges was not a christian. you might say thats fundamentally untrue or hypocritical, but i've no problem with his right to say it
