that perhaps they lack confidence and belief because they can't win even when they score four. They can't even get a draw.

Perhaps going ultra defensive and keeping a few clean sheets will build confidence more. Because the defenders would have more belief in their ability to defend and the attackers would know that one goal may be enough to get the win - rather than needing to score 3 or 4 just to get a point.
