All these XI lists are missing something; how are we going to play, and why? Lets see if the greatest football song of them all, New Orders classic Italia 90 offering can help us.
Express yourself (Play with flair and high tempo)
Create the space (play wide, make off the ball runs and constant movement. So Naismith, Jerome and Bamford, this rules out Mbokani)
You know you can win (its only West Ham FFS)
Don't give up the chase (Press and close down more)
Beat the man (Run at their defence. REDMOND!)
Take him on (Jarvis)
You never give up (make Naismith captain)
It's one on one (Bamford scored loads of these last year for Boro)
Express yourself
It's one on one
Express yourself
It's one on one
Express yourself
You can't be wrong
When somethings good
It's never gone
[Chorus]
Loves got the world in motion
And I know what we can do
Loves got the world in motion
And I can't believe it's true
Now is the time
Let everyone see
You never give up
that's how it should be
Don't get caught (drop Mulumbu from the XI)
Make your own play (Wes?)
Express yourself
Don't give it away (Tettey banned from taking set pieces)
Express yourself
Its one on one
Express yourself
Its one on one
Express yourself
You can't be wrong
When somethings good
Its never wrong
[Chorus: x 2]
You've got to hold and give (O'Neil and Wes in centre mid)
But do it at the right time (don't just hoof it to Mbokani)
You can be slow or fast (Howson or Redmond right wing?)
But you must get to the line (play wide players on their favoured side, ie get crosses in from byline; so thats Olsen and Brady down the left, Redmond or Jarvis on the right)
They'll always hit you and hurt you (Martin and Bassong?)
Defend and attack (wingers need to track back and be able to counter at pace, bye Howson & Wes)
There's only one way to beat them
Get round the back (again, look for overlap, cut back crosses)
Catch me if you can (run with ball, Redmond)
'Cause I'm the England man (Redmond)
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
I toyed with using an Italia 90 style 5-3-2 but we've hardly got 2 acceptable centrebacks, let alone three.
Rudd
Pinto Bennett Klose Olsen
Redmond Tettey O'Neill Brady
Naismith Bamford
