The recruitment over the last 3-4 years isn't his fault either

Despite all the progress the club's made since 2009, at no point - even under Lambert - have we ever had a squad which was obvious Premier League quality. At no point have we ever had a squad which merely an OK manager would keep up. Some of us thought we did in Summer 2013 - but really, we didn't.

We've always needed a very good manager to make us more than the sum of our parts. It's a tough, tough job. And managers good enough to succeed (and who'd want to come) here in this division are seriously few and far between.
