Ours is well seasoned but year should be fine. Get s good old fire going with softer wood,

(we're currently ploughing through loads of sawn up pallets) then chuck a big old larch log on and turn it right down. Burns slow and hot. Mind you, Ash is the best for that along with Hawthorn
