Sperm whales eat squid and mainly live in deep water - 1000m +......

theory is that followed squid around the north coast of Scotland where the water is suitably deep and then down into the North Sea.

Most people don't realise how shallow the North Sea is - less than 100m deep over the vast majority of it's area and this upsets the Sperm Whale's in-built 'sonar' so they become disorientated with the results we have recently seen on our beaches.
