It's not as bad as it used to be. Tends to be ok in and around the cities. The country folk are a lot different (which is where most of the population is). Many rural Australians are suspicious of the cities and their lifestyles.
It seems to have got a little worse again recently with the government pushing the threat of IS in everyone's faces, epically when Tony Abbott was 'king'. It tends to bring out the patriots who confuse immigration and Muslims wanting to build a mosque, with Australia implementing Sharia law across the country. Unfortunately a lot of people here are not particularly well educated so this kind of thing escalates far more than it would elsewhere.
Also many Australians seem to conveniently forget that the majority of them are immigrants, or are children of immigrants. All in all though it's not as bad as some would think. Definitely worse than the UK though.
