Simplistic Techy Help needed

Jeez, I must be really old. My MP3 player died, I've bought a new one and have to pay for all the free stuff I got years ago. Fair enuf, I get that. However, I simply can't work out how to actually BUY one track or album at a time, how to download it onto laptop and from there onto my new MP3 player. All I want to do is search, buy, download and use on two media. Can this actually happen ?? Sorry I sound thick, but (add old 'uns voice here) I'm 61, you know.....
