There is no English word for a female doctor

There is an English word for women who act, and it is not derogatory to use it. I am genuinely (not argumentatively) baffled by the suggestion that actress was invented as a word in order to emphasise gender because it was shameful for a woman to act. That just doesn't make any sense.

I wouldn't use authoress or manageress, I'm not sure how much they've ever been used

Would you use waitress? Hostess? Ballerina? Heroine?
