Just would be rather annoying to know there's not an actual solution after spending ages on it (I'm thinking of the kids here, the wrath probably invested half an hour to an hour max, each I would guess, except Jumbo who I think did it in a matter of seconds!!)
I remember being chuffed as a kid/teen etc working hard to get an answer and being rewarded with that answer (plus the experience of it all/journey of course too)
Imagine if the teacher didn't bother to check that it was actually unsolvable beforehand.
Would be funny watching them try to get outta the moans and groans if the class all realise they were (implicitly) promised a solvable problem lol
