Ex under 21 internationals are pretty common

Nathan Delfouneso is a 24 year old ex England under 21 international. He's currently playing for Blackburn, who got him for nothing after he was released by Blackpool (who got him for nothing after he was released by Villa).

Pinto has at least played in the Champions League this year, which as an indication of ability must rank a fair bit higher than not being deemed good enough by Aston Villa.
