He didn't deny a goalscoring opportunity (to 'deny it' you have to stop it happening). We scored - and the rule isn't 'try to deny a goalscoring opportunity'. So no, he couldn't be sent off.

I did, at the time, rather wish he had succeeded. I would have taken a pen and 44 mins against 10 men, rather than the goal, I think.
