I don't think everyone would starve to death like I keep hearing

and society breaking down etc. people would just start using bikes and horses again.

This happened in Cuba when the Soviet Union collapsed - known as the "special period".

Most of the places I visited had horse-drawn passenger carts or at best moto-taxis to get around town.
