I would suggest that they would have made more territorial progress

without it, yes. I also feel we are actually a bit fussier about who we bomb than the Americans (& far more so than the Russians).

I got fascinated by 'Tanks' on bbc4 recently - not something that usually grabs me - & one thing that stood out was how we bombed German positions relentlessly before sending tanks in, but it had made hardly any difference to the enemy's strength. BUT it did stop them attacking while the bombing occurred.
