What I have done in the past is.

Went by car, avoided Manchester but went into Altrincham.
From there I got the tram, hopped off at Sale for a beer in Spoons, then back on the tram, it stops right outside Old Trafford cricket ground and from there it's only a short walk to the ground.

The best bit about this is coming home. The queues for the tram going back into Manchester are horrendous but not bad at all going the other way.

Altrincham to the M6 is easy and straight forward.
