Well, there is a reason

which is that it reduces the quality of the majority of matches. In the past few Euros there have been 30 matches, and about 20-25 of them were highly competitive and intense games. Teams had to be close to their best from the very start of the tournament.

Now there will be 52 games and probably about 12 of them will be competitive games between relatively evenly matched sides. The rest will be one sided or will have little riding on them, because so many teams progress.

And the competition is already open to the lesser nations. The qualifiers should exist to get rid of the rubbish teams.
