If you revert to a simple 442 the other team can exploit the 2 forwards roaming, to the point where the other team feel like they have an extra man. If they feel like this, then they create a free role for the creative player whilst having the water carrier (Vieira, claude, mascherano etc)

I think the general view is you can play 442 with good players and strikers, but it's seen as a formation which can cause vulnerability in teams because of how the game has evolved since 451 of 2004-05
