we were seen and not heard.
We had none of this namby-pamby teacher training lark. We had the same old crusty teachers that hadn't experienced the real world for at least fifty years previous. Usually just got 'six across' with the cane, and got on with it.
National holidays were not an excuse to go down the local precinct to smoke, drink, swear, intimidate others, fight, steal, spray graffitti on private property etc...
Election polling took place in Community Centres or Village Halls round my way. Electing councillors, MPs or the next Prime Minister certainly wasn't an excuse to bunk off school.
