As regards M&S, as a BO watching veteran, I think they're essential to the show. In some ways comes down to OG's comparison with Masterchef above - the point of GBBO is that it takes itself much less seriously than MC. That's the attraction of it for lots of people who like it, I think (including me). They're the ones that deliver that, with all the double-entrendres, end of the pier humour, gentle ribbing of Paul etc. The point of all that is - "it's only baking, in the end - don't take it, or yourself, too seriously.
Very British (just like baking competitions are). Sometimes it does veer a bit away from that towards the traditional docusoap tension, time running out stuff, dramatic music etc - their job is to try and keep the lid on that.
That's what I think, anyway.
