"Mb" is one sound, so "Mbok" is one syllable

Say mmmmmmmbok. Then say mmmmmbok. Then say mmbok. Then say the shortest possible m you can before the b. You get a sound a little like a b in English but not quite. That (I think!) is the sound at the start of "Mbokani". It certainly isn't Ember Car Knee (that was my suggested Canary Call pronunciation).

In the same way "Dieu" is a single syllable with a "dy" sound at the start. The nearest I can think of is the English word "during" - that's actually a "dy-oo" sound at the start but no-one would say "during" has three syllables.
