The one sitting on the hippo says "I bet my son can beat your son at tug of war". The other two, who are sitting on lion skins, and have an (adopted) son (together - they're a couple) say "you're on".
And so the tug of war starts at dawn the next day. Both men put in tremendous effort. By midday they agree a short rest as they are bathed in sweat. By sun-down they eventually give up and call it a draw.
The son of the squaw on the hippopotamus is equal to the son of the squaws on the other two hides.
