the defence is weakened by us not having a decent striker

it means we have to set up the midfield primarily to attack if we want to score - as the strikers won't get enough to win us games.

It's not disimilar to last time we were in the prem in that respect. Hughton chose to combat the problem by making us compact and hard to break down; Neil has taken the approach of trying to outscore the opposition.
