a variety of factors

not sure anybody really knows. They were the last side to start pre-season. I think the big one is that their defence has aged a lot this calendar year and they haven't really spotted this early enough to rectify it, and when the defence is dodgy then the rest of the team can suffer. Also a lack of leaders at the club? Players a bit bored of Mourinho's tactics? Obviously a lack of hunger there too, that was always the most impressive thing about Ferguson and Manchester United, they never got bored of winning.
