there is literally no way that is possible

they use exactly the same ticketing database. the only way it could happen is if you checked a ticket on trainline first, put it in your basket, then checked on another operator's website and if the one in your basket was the last one of that advance fare price band then the same price wouldn't show up on the toc's website. in any other situation if you think it's cheaper on trainline then you're not comparing like for like tickets.

also, some operators e.g. East Coast give % discounts on their routes if you book through their website which you don't get anywhere else

summary: trainline is a rip-off and it makes me seethe
