My family are Japanese

It's offensive. 'Japan' in Japanese is 'Nihon' or 'Nippon'. To say using shortened versions is just an abbreviation is naive. You wouldn't (I hope) use a shortened version of the Japanese version, so why would a shortened version of the English version be any less offensive?

A Brit is a noun in itself, so you aren't comparing the same thing, even though I personally don't like being called a Brit (often by Americans) but I don't know a single Japanese person who would like being called a Jap.
