It looked to me like one of two things happened in the Jerome chance,

1) He lost his footing slightly/studs caught in the turf as he was about to place it.

2) He was caught in two minds as whether to curl it into the corner off the outside of his boot or nutmeg the keeper. Butland was off his line so fast that Jerome didn't get a chance to make that decision and skewed it wide instead.

I think it was probably the latter, thinking about it as a former striker myself.
