Another vote for Rome

I've been to a lot of European cities (with work). They're all lovely in their own way with plenty of history and architecture and art and so on. But Rome is, well, Rome. There's stuff there.

If you go there post on here and I can give you the top tourist tips (eg how to avoid the Vatican queues, which Catacombs to go see, Ostia Antica by tube, how to get under St Peter's Church to St Peter's actual tomb and then up to the cupola which shines light all the way through onto it, how to avoid the queues at the Colisseum - I just love walking straight past rude Americans complaining they've been waiting an hour to get in because they're too stupid to get the ticket at the "other" entrance to the Forum - Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, how to eat affordably, jumpers for goalposts, marvellous isn't it?)
