Surely it's equally realistic to think that after meeting him in person, or for a second time - we don't know do we, that Neil had the strength of character to say, you know what, I've got a bad feeling about it after all...

You paint the picture that the Board and Neil didn't talk about it, or Neil wasn't involved until the last minute, which just sounds so unrealistic and simplistic to me.
