He did try to save....

....the ball coming back out of the goal when he dived into the back of the net, two seconds after the ball was behind him. seemed to be stuck between a leg save or a hand save.

Whits seemed to read the situation well but was unable to execute a defend mannoover successful enough to prevent a ghoul.
