surrender only came when the allies subsequently threatened to bomb Tokyo next 'and keep bombing Japan until there is nothing and no-one left' - I think that is what finally did it.
There were definitely some fked up people running the country/military in Japan at that time but surrender was also difficult culturally. Anyway, what's done is done. I don't agree with the right-wing Japanese element that want to scrub all Japanese aggression from the history/text books but I do think Asia could learn from the Europeans in terms of moving on.
