Dad's ship was the first to rescue POWs from the Japanese camps

It had a profound effect on him for the rest of his life. We weren't allowed to buy Japanese cars for example. My sisters and I were big supporters of CND as teenagers and would get so frustrated by his attitude. We just didn't understand what he had been through. I don't think it can be overestimated what witnesses like your dad and my dad had to cope with.

Years later we had a young Japanese student come and stay with us for a week. We'd been worried about how it would go but they got on brilliantly. I was so proud!
