there is no way he would lose a minute on a flat stage anyway. His team would pace him round and make sure he was within the time required.

Great big time differentials only happen on the hillier stages. The winner will always have to be a beast in the mountains. That's why sprinters like Mark Canvendish can win four or five flat stages but have no chance of winning overall. He wins his stages by seconds, while climbers can win their stages by minutes.
