Sometimes they will just warn you what to expect next year.

if you don't have the repairs they recommend then it may fail next year, might not. If you were thinking of selling or replacing you could consider the costs involved compared to what you might spend on a new(er) car.

You can always take it to another garage and ask for a second opinion.
Or I think the aa and rac can do surveys and reports on work carried out by other garages.
